Photo Sunday on Monday...

Busy weekend; the boat didn't get wet, but only because yesterday saw 30 mile an hour winds and somehow the idea of whitecaps didn't enthuse me! It's to the point now where we can hook it up and go, and after 11 years or so, that's something!

A week ago on Sunday afternoon while Dottie was at work, I met John and Noel at our county lake's "children's pond" so the kids could bank fish a bit.

I rigged a "bobber rig" for trout, but no one had the patience for bobber watching, they wanted to "cast and crank" so this is Dillon watching me rig a "Beetle spin" for him...

Caleb wouldn't give up his litte "catch-em kit" to let me tie a lure on for him; it may have been safer that way!

Talia may turn out to be the most intent of the three grandkids...

Though it was only in the 50's and the wind was fairly strong, everyone seemed to enjoy the outing!

Which is about as good as it gets, really, in this life!

I did not live on the same continent as my only living set of grandparents and my dad was never an outdoorsy guy so the whole fishing thing passed me by. I see these photos and want to try fishing from the bank even now. I think I'll plan for that this summer.

You are such a good grandpa. They will always remember the time you spent with them.

I think one key to helping a youngster learn to like bobber fishing, if that's even a goal, is to start them out on one of those "immediate gratification" panfish beds -- the ones where you know you'll only catch three to five inch perch or bluegill, but you'll catch a fish on an eighth of an inch of crawler every sixty seconds. Not very exciting for a grown-up until the kids' eyes light up from success! Then you can start telling them some fish tales: there are bigger fish out there, but they take a little longer to catch, and it's very important to be as quiet as possible, and you have to be very patient, etc. If they like catching the little fish, and you have some pictures of bigger fish you've caught that you can tell a story about, it's amazing how even a small child who's interested can summon the patience and self control for a few hours in the boat hoping for his first "keeper."

Or not! It's all good fun, and we all have our preferences and styles. I grew into the Huck Finn style pretty young -- content to watch that bobber until I nodded off and someone had to nudge me when it finally went under.

I'm having fun thinking back to how those grown-ups sucked ME in!

Time spent with my grandparents are some of my favorite memories. Granddads do everything better than anybody! Those kids will one day tell their kids about that delightful weekend.

zilla-that's exactly why I bought some gear that is more oriented to panfish than bass. My Dad had me fishing with a cane pole before I can remember, but after that it was a light fly rod and panfish for several years before I got a spincasting reel. I still remember coming home with enough bluegill for our house and a neighbor's to have a nice dinner.

I forgot those lessons with my sons, and they don't have the love the way I do; I'm trying to get it back for the next generation!

I'm looking forward to a wonderful summer!
