and though this isn't the definitive version, they tell a story I've read for years about the person who did record it...Louis Armstrong.
The story I read was that the police took Louis to jail, finally releasing him at the insistence of the owner of the club who had booked him. Then of course, they also wanted autographs and wanted to attend the concert as well...
Guess some things don't change as much as you'd think they might!

Speaking of "medicinal,"
I remember once, in college, my boyfriend and I were "chaperoning" a New Years Eve party held in his parents home by his younger step-brothers. His dad called around midnight to wish us all a Happy New Year and to make sure things were under control. My boyfriend told him, "Things are going quite well, Dad. The 'glaucaoma patients' arrived a little later than we expected, but they've all relinquished their car keys and I don't expect any trouble." :-)
Problem with those who used "medicinally" was they were less likely to share ;-)
